Into Playin' Geetar

Comm 310 Projects:

Playin' Geetar

Since as far back as I can remember, I've been interested in music. I grew up listening to my parents' Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, and Gordon Lightfoot records. Then I won the 'Lost in Space' soundtrack on cassette at a movie theatre and my life was transformed. Because of the medium, not the soundtrack. I could record, and overdub, and make mixes, and really do whatever I wanted. Casettes were a beautiful thing. Eventually I moved on to CDs, and am obviously over that now that the convenience of iTunes and other fancy Apple productions has the market cornered.

At the tender age of 12, after a grueling summer of farm work, I purchased my first electric guitar. Ever since, I've been hooked. I love playing music just as much as I love listening to it. Those are my two greatest passions. Currently I play in the local vintage-American-indie-folk-rock band Seminole Roots. Like us on Facebook. Please. We should be releasing some recordings very soon.

What's Under the Hood

COMM 310 is unlike any class I've ever taken at BYU-Idaho. Maybe it's because I'm relatively new to the Communication department, but I've learned things about the Internet in this class that I never even knew existed. Because of what we've learned about CSS and PHP, I find myself browsing the web and wondering 'how did they do that?' or conversely, 'cool, I know exactly how they did that.' Whereas before, I wouldn't have given it a second thought. I've been able to implement so many new ideas into projects I've worked on. This class has brought out my inner-nerd.

From a simple 'View Source' click or 'Command-Option-I,' I've been able to dissect pages that I regularly visit and figure out how they do some of the things they do. I've been able to see 'under the hood' of the Internet, and discover its inner workings. At least to an extent, anyway. I find it fascinating, and hope to continue my education in web development. I tried 'View Source' on Facebook, and it gave me a headache.
