Into Event Planning

Comm 310 Projects:

Event Planning

Ever since my Mom allowed me to plan my seventh birthday party I love to plan any and all events. In High School it was all of my friends birthday parties, and in college it is planning Center Stage events.

Since attending Brigham Young University-Idaho I began my event planning with planning the tour for on campus performing group Dance Alliance when they went to Texas. I then moved to my current position as Center Stage Student Director. I have planned on campus performances from Mindy Gledhill, to Kirby Heyborn, to Ryan Shupe & the RubberBand, to Chinese Acrobats, to most currently Brian Stokes Mitchell. I have to opportunity to oversee all marketing as well as working one on one with each of the performers. I love event planning because it is fast pace, it allows you to learn multiple skills that will one day be marketable to an employer, and the connections that I have made with each of the performers.

What I am taking away

I am not going to lie (because Jesus told me not to) but this class has been very difficult for me. There were many times that I sat in class and had no clue what was going on. I signed up for this class because I am not computer~savy and I wanted to better my skills. I did learn a lot, but much of what I learned from this class was not computer related.

The first thing I learned was how to code. I am still not a master at it, but I now have the skills to look at a html source code and at least have the ability to navigate my way around. These second thing that I learned from this class was perseverance. For most of the semester there was not a tutor, and when I went to the open lab, many of the lab assistance did not know how to do html, css, or php. I had to find my own tutor to work with. There were times that my grade were not the best but I still decided to come to class and work hard and pay attention. I am sure that perseverance will not be found in this courses syllabis, but that is a skill that I have learned while in comm 310.
